Playthrough notes of Cave Story; it's not finished because I still haven't completed the game yet. First started on 8th August 2023. Commentary starts a bit later (and is longer) than usual. Aside from making line breaks more screen reader-friendly, commentary is kept as is for posterity reasons (regardless of typos). Spoilers, of course, for the game itself. Please refrain from reposting ever. ---Commentary below--- I'm starting this way later than intended. --- Returning to Arthur's house after finding Kazuma and the prof --- "And we're weapons?" And then happy music right after. I guess this would explain Sue's hatred. Weren't there like, red flowers somewhere around here. ~~~ My brother hoggled the game for a moment but now we're back in action. ~~~ Oh okay so it's only MENTIONED. The mimiga with glasses isn't in Arthur's house... Ah he's in the Assembly Hall. Maybe there's sth in this fireplace... I might need a powerup (if there's any) to go through that door in the graveyard. Is it just me or have those plants grown a little? I guess not? I got the bubbler after extinguishing the flames! It automatically refills after you use it. Apparently there's a life capsule in the egg room that I missed so I'm gonna go back and get it now. Might as well use this as a chance to see what the bubbler could do. So the bubbler is incredibly short-ranged... Aww yeah the range is better now. Wait... now it's like, a normal gun now??? Got the Life Capsule. --- Sand Zone --- OMG that's the yellow robot girl!!! Wait come back- Is this quicksand? No... You can't shoot down here either (though I guess this makes sense.) What's this wine room? Oh god the audio glitched out when I 'paused the game' Oh hey look it's the robot girl and a bunch of mimigas. Hey I'm on their side too! Welp there's that. Huh now we got a choice to trade our gun with her machine gun... This is prob an ending branch. Let's trade it for now. I wonder if the machine gun limits our bullets? Oh god I just had a morbid thought. What if you could harm the mimigas in this room? Yep, it's limited. Nevermind it's actually like the bubbler - it refills itself. Oh you could rapidfire with the bubbler and the machine gun. *in response to the leftmost mimiga* The dog? Please tell me there's a safe point here. YES. And that must be the dog the mimiga was talking about. Awww the puppy's on my head! I feel like i walk slower with the dog? Also side note, I guess this debunks the 'Sue is yellow robot girl- or um, Curly Brace- theory' I don't trust those sand pits... Thank god those sharp things can't come inside. Oh. O KAY then. Not as bad as getting instant death in the sand pit. Wait you can ATTACK those spinny wheely things??? Oh my god I didn't NEED to avoid them... Oh epic, secret free health AND a save point. Calling it now, those are insta-kill spikes. Oop well now I have an extra reason for using the health refiller. Oh god this looks like a boss battle... Okay well now that I know what to do... I think I have to level up my gun. Wouldn't it be funny if they gathered around me after I came back from the Sand Zone, only to find out I came back to grind? Okay they didn't say anything about it. That makes sense game-wise, since it would be annoying to have them do that every single time you come back. --- brief grinding --- OHHH YES THAT'S HOW I WANT THE SHOT TO BE! --- back to Sand Zone --- Oh look the dog is already waiting for me. Woah I could kinda glide for a moment Oh I bet I could use this for the graveyard door. *looking at the walkthrough* Excuse me? Curly's UNDERWEAR??? Great we got the undies now how do we get out? Oh. Like that. Will she comment on the fact that I stole her underwear? Okay apparently not. YES! The fireball carried me through the fight! The Sun Stones opened. Ohh there's a lot of hearts here. Wait why is there another dog at that door? No... a softlock? Okay there we go. I shouldn't click on this while walking again. Wait there's sth over here. Jenka's house! Oh no... Not YOU again! 'Daughter'? Wait a minute... It IS Misery! They're related... How interesting. "You're regret it" Ooh... that's ominous. How did he- Nevermind, there's prob a hole on the ceiling that I can't see. Wait... I've heard this song before... Is it that one song from the kung fu Shin-chan movie??? That's wild. I didn't know it wasn't specifically made for the movie. Maybe Shin-chan took inspiration from it? jkjk- Unless... Welp, time to bring that other puppy (or those other puppies, I guess.). Where'd the dog go??? Did I scare it off? So I had to time it... I thought it was scared of the enemies... Hmmm... What if the bigger mimigas with red eyes ate the red flowers? Oh phew those were just a save point and a health refiller. Uh... Kinda ominous not gonna lie... Can I go back out first? I can. Good. I think I'll get the Life Capsule first. ...Ok maybe not. Oh uh... Sorry for leaving you here puppy, but I can't pick up more than one dog. 'Frenzied Mimiga'? Like one of those big, red-eyed Mimigas? *responding to Jenka* They couldn't turn back? Actually, maybe they still exist? I mean, I saw some big, red-eyed Mimigas... Imagine if Sue turned into one of those at the end we had to fight her... Calling it now, the last dog with say 'arf' five times. Oh! A secret passage! Ah ha! So that's how you get the treasure chest! Wait... did the dogs all have different flavour text all this time and I didn't notice??? Well now I have sth new to look forward to on my repeat playthroughs. Oh... Oh NO. Where'd the dogs go??? In the pots, maybe? I know I should check up on her, but I gotta save first. A Life Pot? Okay I was wrong- the last dog only said- or well, whined. Maybe you'll get a different ending if you used the Life Pot. Why is there a random secret passage here? So that's what the doctor looks like... Seeing as the next place is called 'the labyrinth', you think we'll actually get sent to another place right after the fight? Maybe we'll only get through halfway? Wait... weren't there red flowers in Arthur's room? Uh oh. Is that Toroko? Yep. Are we gonna fight her? That's gonna be messed up. Holy shit King to the rescue??? Damn, he defeated Balrog in one hit. That's gotta be one mighty sword in order to do that. Oh shit, I think she's already infected. --- Toroko boss battle --- Oh crap, I was right--- Oh, you can actually instantly skip the dialogue by hitting x after you lost. That's neat. ??? I thought the blocks were indestructible? THE WALKTHROUGH LIED TO ME! Anyways here she goes --- BACK to game --- Oh wow she's literally gone. She poofed herself out of the game. How did King get here before I did anyway? I guess after Balrog got the key? Since I got in later. And King dies too! Oh hey he left behind a sword. Oh it kinda works like a boomerang, except it doesn't go back. Actually maybe ninja star is more accurate... Ow. What if the robot Misery was talking about was Curly? Or what if it was actually just ME? Oh, I was right with my prediction! Wow. Poor Balrog. --- The Labyrinth --- Lots of robots here... It's playing Jenka's theme. Or maybe it isn't actually Jenka's theme, but rather an atmospheric song (you know what I'm talking about, right?)? Or maybe... it's playing this song because it's the song of Misery and Jenka (plus, they're related)? What about you, little guy? Your eyes aren't lit up. ...Okay then. Why'd Misery send enemies to the trash heap? Unless those aren't enemies at all? Oh no, those are for sure enemies. I wonder if Sue and gang are worried about me? Can I even go back to the graveyard afterwards? Ew, there are eyes engraved onto the walls and ground. I'd hate to progress this level without the machine gun... which is prob what we'll do on subsequent playthroughs. The enemies are surprisingly chill? You gonna go in? The door's already open. Oh my god, what if that robot is a boss, and we gotta fight in order to get through? Like, the door suddenly closes, the robot's eyes light up... you know the drill. Okay then. I hope we get to see the robot's eyes light up again, along with King and Toroko and all the other dead things come back to life. Oh. I thought the labyrinth would be where we have to use the Life Pot, but the enemies still drop health. Oh, funky beat! Are these cockroaches??? Could the witch be Misery? Maybe I'm stretching here... It could also be Jenka. Turbocharge! *After reading the desc* Oh sweet, that could be useful. Ah hah! I called it! I knew the witch was Jenka! Gah. The way to the secret thing is JUST blocked by my machine gun being at lv2 Luckily there's some exp outside. Oh it's just a teleporter. I thought it would replenish your health and stuff. There's one enemy that consistently drops hearts, which is convenient. EDIT: Nevermind, I just got lucky. I bet Pixel wanted to trick us to use it here, but nuh-uh-uh! I saw through your tricks (that you prob didn't meant)! ~~~ Huh. That's actually the doctor at the beginning. Balrog and Misery are there too, but they look like they just got their souls sucked out. What if the doctor is actually related to Kazuma and Sue, as in he's their father or relative or former friend? Another theory: Balrog and Misery was created by the doctor. The latter seems unlikely at first, but she could the the daughter of the doctor. ~~~ Oh wow, the blade does a lot of damage already at the first level. OH YES THAT IS A GOOD ATTACK. Kinda reminds me of Sakuya a bit. You can literally attack farther enemies while hiding. I also like that you can see King's ghost doing the attacks. Oh look there's Curly over there. There's just a puddle of water here... Oh! Curly perks up when you go near her! Damn. That's depressing. "Medicine that looks usable"? Maybe I have to get some from the shop. Thta's interesting... It automatically puts you at max lv 3. I guess that's to prevent you from cheating. Oh. I guess not from the shop then. OMG BAD TIMING AVAST Wait... There's some sort of secret passage here... Huh. It just cuts off here. Then again, some of the other secret passages also do this too, don't they? Ah ha! Also a useful thing to have. Why is there a... tear here? Oh there's the clinic. Oh no this feels like a boss battle. I feel like you can't get up there without the machine gun. Oh wait I should go back there manually. I swear there's gonna be a boss battle here. Or maybe we'll meet Balrog here. Who knows? Welp. I was right in both cases. Annnd... he also dies too???!!!! Bruh. Woops forgot to check the flavour text. I bet he'll finish it if I come back again. EDIT: I was right. No, don't say that Curly! You won't get in our way! That, and you appear as a playable character in the screenshots. Curly's gone now. Maybe this is where we get to play as her. Okay you literally can't get past here without the machine gun. Maybe you could if there wern't insta-kill spickes around. That room looks like a boss chamber... Nevermind, I guess not. It's nice that their attacks drop exp and hearts. What if for the boss you fight a giant cockroach? That would be disgusting. --- Bulldozer battle --- OH I GUESS IT IS A BOSS CHAMBER oJAY HOW AM i SUPPOSED TO DEFEAT THIS THING? YESS!!! OMG --- after battle --- Castle in the Sky??/? Also how did that thing fell? I don't think there are any holes on the ceiling (apart from ones i CAN'T SEE) Oh look there she is! *in response to the text* We have exactly two people. Curly how did you get here without the boss showing up? Bye I'm leaving lol. Okay let's move the boulder already. Oh nevermind, Balrog ISN'T dead! "You're alive, I see!" I could say the same to you, stupid! He just helps them anyway. Oh nevermind. Damn. Did he smile as he left or is that just how he normally looks? He left a treasure chest for us. Oh! Powered up missiles! It basically just replaced it with my old one so now I have to grind for it. *replying to Curly* Yes but before that... Oh, there's the professor. Eye reveal. Zelda reference? Ah so that's how you get by without the machine gun. Is he dead???? Damn. Characters dying left and right. Can I use the teleporter? An engineer, huh... Ohh! this is pretty useful! She went without me. Now she's following me! I wonder if she helps me attack... Imagine this is actually just another player... I think she attacks with my old gun. How come SHE gets an air bubble while I don't???? I hope there's an in game reason for this. Can she walk past spikes???? Whoop I died We just teleported somewhere. The labyrinth shop! Okay so the other teleporter doesn't work. --- Dark place --- Isn't this the starting area? I don't know why there's water here. Looks kinda like a boss stage ngl, even if there's a save point there. --- Core --- The core??? as in Undertale's core? Maybe UT referenced this place. Let's see how similar it is. EDIT: Not similar at all. She just goes on her own, huh. Mouse disappeared for a moment, but fixed it. 'Abnormaility'? Maybe it's talking about Curly? (I almost said Sue for a second) Oh! You just had to hit it. Now what? Oh god I have to make it underwater. Let's see if the other thing changed first. Nope. Still closed. Okay it isn't SO bad. She went on off screen. I wonder if this is more of a lore stage then anything? There hasn't been any enemies so far. Oh wait. There IS sth that looks like a boss. Maybe it'll come to life? Uh oh. I knew that was the boss! She's back up now. Phew that was a close one. I was about to drown there. --- after --- First try! That's Misery. And she's pissed off. Wait why's the water still here? OHNO NONONONON- Oh. That was supposed to happen. Oh. She gave me her bubble. I wonder how that whole scene from before will play out if I don't say I'm on the Mimigas' side. Oh man the whole room's flooded. ...And the shutter closed. The theme of this place sounds much sadder now. Now the save disk's on the ground. --- Waterway --- Now I can't go back up if I tried. Can those things hurt me? I'm kinda scared to try out. Yep. They hurt me. And they do a hefty amount of damage too. Ohhh. Secret hearts here. Woah, don't blow mw towards spikes! NO! So this is where that place went. Music's depressing now. Everyone's gone... Before we check Arthur's house, Let's go to the graveyard first. I wonder if graveyard's where we're supposed to go? I mean, you could go in if you had the machine gun so... maybe not? Then again, it could be locked off if you accessed it early. --- storage --- So... no. It's just some guy in the storage. Actually, maybe we'll have to go to him later once we go in Arthur's house. No music here. --- re:Mimiga Village --- Oh my god what is this music??? It's like when you realise sth is wrong, very wrong. Okay. It gets hopeful later on. I guess I'm supposed to go to the egg corrider now. But first, let's go to the other places. Oh. Santa is gone. They got the rest of the Mimigas in Curly's place too. --- Egg Corridor? --- The music's different. The place is different too. *responding to Blue Guy* I don't know man! Holy hell where are all these enemies coming from? The spikes FALL??? I don't know why you would want to go in here. (Cthulu's Abode) Oh you HAVE to go through. At least this place still has the same music. What??? Oh my god you're such a troll Pixel! I wonder if it will change to Egg Corridor? after I go back. Nope. Still just Egg Corridor. WHat is that yellow thing? What do you mean '5'?! Oh god it was a bomb. NO! I JUST GOT HERE! finally! DONT GET IN THE WAY OF WHAT I WANT Okay how do I get out? Oh. It isn't visible but the exit's there. FINALLY, BACK AT FULL HEALTH. It hatched. Kazuma! What happened to Sue and- Actually I can hazard a guess. Ah. So Misery took her. The prof is gone- I saw her die right before my eyes. There's a CHOICE. ...Let's pick 'yes'. --- Outer Wall --- ...Can I fall off here? Yep. It's odd how you can just die there... It also didn't say you died but rather 'you were never seen again'. Maybe we survived the fall? I mean, we don't take fall damage after all. ~~~ He just made a door out of no where ~~~ It seems like something's underneath... We're looking down. --- End --- How did we survive tho? Was there wild fruit hanging around? I guess we ended up in a place full of water and fruit. It didn't mention anything about the dragon, which is odd. Am I supposed to wait for it to end? I think I'm supposed to shut it off. It's interesting how this is the bed ending. I mean, since the doctor kinda destroyed the whole world and all... Welp. What if what they're planting are the red flowers? *replying to talking Mimiga* I'm not a human tho. Yep, they're red flowers. Cripes it's a jail. And it's the second one! Oh, Sue's hding somewhere in this place (not the jail, but outside) Ohh! secret tunnel! Oh god... I guess so? I mean, I could just go back, right? Oh! it's Grasstown! That's good. Life capsule! Imagine it just teleports you to a different place each time. It still takes you to the shelter. It still says 'unknown destination' after you've went through. Strange. Yeah! 40 HP. Oh there they are! Sue, Jack and that one chubby Mimiga are still alive. Except... we're kinda blocked off. What? What are those red blocks? They don't do anything... you just kinda go through them... Oh. Well, I get why now. Hm... you can't attack them. Oh there we go. We can talk to Sue and gang. Except... we can't. Something's blocking us. There's a door here. Hold up. I wanna see what happens if I do up to the upper area of the resevoir. EDIT: Absolutely nothing! Imagine if this is a 1/100 chance this will teleport you to somewhere dangerous. Haven't seen you in a while too, robot! Imagine if the robot got all upset if you didn't visit it again... and then you lose your perfect ending! That's why I'm gonna talk to it. Ohhh! Secret passage! 'Password'???? Guess we'll have to come back later. The buff guy's just chilling until you hit it. What's a 'gunfish'? It's talking about those fish, I think. Though I don't understand how you use them as platforms. Hey something's under those spikes- Oh. Kinda annoying to teleport back here every time. Oh look it's the Cthulu dude. (or girl or neither?) Just lore? Well at least you got a bed. The fish don't shoot you when you're underwater. Cutscene? I just came back out of the other pipe. ??? How are you supposed to get that thing? Oh. I thoght it was gonna lead to the second jail but we're in a Rest Area. Oh yeah, I remember you. You're that fishing guy! Guess we gotta go to the fishing area later. Nothing to say? What is with this game and random secret tunnels that do absolutely nothing?! Oh I bet we're gonna fish up whatever's under the spikes (prob a key) There they are! Hey don't sneak up behind me while I'm typing this thing. Yep, the spikes indeed had a key. Oh, uh... hello there? I'll leave now bye- I can't rest in your bed?! Are you serious??? UH OH- Um... I think I should've killed the guy. ...Or maybe not? Who's talking to me right now? Oh! I got in the jail. *after reading chubby guy's text* That confirms who took me in. Damn. How long was I napping for? Where's Jack tho? A letter? So her mom's still alive... and we got the password now. An interesting thing is that it doesn't say she got turned into a Mimiga, nor that she was human before. Hm... Now we know what the room above's for. Man, you'd think she'd heal me back to full health.... She got rid of the enemy, that's nice. Speaking of Sue, how did she conveniently get here anyway? I'm supposed to go up but... how? By juking them? OH wait... we already have the password. --- Sue's mother --- I think that's Sue and Kazuma's mother. My booster! Yes! an actual bed! I'm pretty sure the Mimigas in jail will have different dialogue. --- Mimiga disguise --- Oh man these Mimigas are brainwashed. Flowey's line???? Woah music sped up there. How can they still tell I'm a killer robot? I bet I can talk to the guys in the Rest Area now. Next time, I should hand over the broken sprinkler to Momori. What if I hand the new sprinkler to the Mimiga? What's THis door? What? 'Passage?'? Let's save for now... Now the way to the jail is blocked off again! Oh well, I guess he won't have to see my Mimiga disguise. ??? Something's up there but it won't pan up. (I hope it isn't spikes.) ...Nothing's up there. 'Statue chamber', huh? Okay the Mimiga just says new dialogue. Crack theory: What if Sue, Kazuma, Momori, us...etc are the real bad guys? Like the doctor was right all along... I hope they don't do that though. That'd ruin the story for me (unless it's explained in a way that makes sense) Ah. Now we need Itoh. Why'd the Sakamotos bring itoh along? What if we could skip the sprinkler by never using the jet booster? I imagine Momori would hint towards that by saying the booster's used up considerable amount of battery. "controller"? Like a game controller- What if that isn't what she's looking for though. You forgot to giver her his regards- Now the bed's become a way to pass time. She's gone. Hope that doesn't mean anything bad. She's up there now. Along with Itoh somehow. So he came here of his own volition? It would've been funny if he got dragged here. But the character arc's nice too. Yay! I got the booster back! I wonder if the chubby guy and the Mimigas in the Rest Area are alright? The ones in the Rest Area're gone save for one. Did the doctor not need every Mimiga alive? Or does he just need one? Mimiga jail 2 is empty. Dog! THE DOG TALKS YES GOOD DOG THANK YOU FOR BRINGING LIFE CAPSULE Chubby guy's still there. So it seems like the doctor only picks a select few. That, or he doesn't need every Mimiga alive (see what I did there?). I kinda wanna see if Kazuma will say different stuff after meeting his mother. He's gone now??? I guess the situation got too dire. Oh god what if I fell of during this part? Well, I guess I have a chance to see, since I didn't get off in time Wait... there's another place high up in the village. Oh it's the first cave! I guess my character walked off the platform, leading him to fall. I'm pretty sure we can get to the core from here. Oh the guy's awake now. "A really fearsome weapon" eh? I bet the dialogue would've changed if I had the Polar Star with me. So I'm guessing that having the Polar Star equipped would be hard mode. I mean, some of the areas could be skipped with the machine gun... Hey the fishing Mimiga's still there. Not ALL Mimigas are gone. Only the ones farming, in Rest Area (save for one), and in jail are gone. I'm sure the rocket will come back. Ah yes there it is. --- Final cave --- Ohhh, it's the final cave. And there's blood dripping off the ceiling. i hope these guys don't have knockback. Oh these aren't instakill spikes. That's good. Oh god these guys totally have knockback, don't they. The fireball's actually more effective for killing them. I don't think I can actually go back down. Crap, I should've restored to full health first. Oof 1 hp left. Welp. Would've been cool if I made it to final boss with just one hp. I'm farming these bats right now, I do NOT want to go with full hp. I can't believe I spent so much time doing that. Anyways I'm back with full hp now. --- Balcony --- OMG that took, like, forever Save point, please? PHEW! Oh man, some of these could've been the Mimigas we saw. Some of them might even be Jack! (what happened to jack anyway?) OH MY GOD! JUST WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR! Going to the yellow clouds puts me back at the house. --- Throne room --- The throne room, eh? I bet this is where the boss battle is. There's misery. --- Misery battle --- Yo!! First try? --- After --- I swear to god if there's another battle right after like Luna Nights... Doesn't seem like it. An exit? I can't go back... I think next battle (if there IS one) will be a perfect time to use the Life Pot. --- The King's Table --- There're the captured Mimigas! 'King'... Oh King... Three eyes?? Oh you poor, neive child (or maybe I'M the one who's naive, who knows?) A red crystal? Uh oh. Humans too? I'm sure the robots will be fine though. What if all of this is an allegory for corruption? *Responding to doctor* I don't know if I can. I mean, I'm neither human nor Mimiga. Oh well, he knew I couldn't. Like a BOSS FIGHT? YEP --- vs doctor --- First try again? Wait... don't tell me... Third boss fight???? --- vs doc again --- Three boss fights in a row, huh... How did I manage to do worse on my third try? Oh m y gosh??? Please PLEASE let this be over. YES I KNEW SUE WAS A HUMAN *GASP* they're giving me health! That's so sweet! I couldn't get all of them in time, but the thought counts. Santa? I DO remember you, Santa. Welp. It's time to leave now. --- Blank space --- I hope that was the final battle. This place rly feels like a boss arena. PLEASE LET ME ME BE MISERY That's Sue! NOOOOOO I JUST WANNA COMPLETE THE GAME DON'T COME BACK DOCTOR I have only bad feelings about this... NOOOOO This game has four fucking boss battles at once. that's insane. From a thematic perspective, that's great! From a game perspective, NO Oh I didn't even know you could interact with the bookcase here. The crystal does damage too?! The blade seems to do much more damage, so I'll use that. Okay nevermind the blade has crappy range. Maybe I'll use it for the doctor instead. ...Nevermind, I'll use it for when he gets corrupted by the crystal. Nevermind again!
